Archbishop Alexander Sample

Archbishop Alexander Sample was named the archbishop of Portland, Oregon, on April 2, 2013. He holds a master’s degree in metallurgical engineering from Michigan Technological University, completed theological studies and a master of divinity degree at Pontifical College Josephinum Seminary, and holds a licentiate in canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, Rome. Ordained a priest for the Diocese of Marquette in 1990, he served as its bishop from 2006 to 2013. Archbishop Sample has served as a board member for a number of organizations, including Oregon Catholic Press, Oregon Catholic Conference, Mount Angel Seminary, Catholic Charities, and the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He is also a member of the USCCB Catechism Subcommittee.
