The LEAD Experience

The Franciscan LEAD Experience

Franciscan LEAD is a five-day, Christ-centered, sacrament-soaked, prayer- fueled immersion in Catholic teachings on leadership, evangelization, and discipleship inspired by the life and witness of St. Francis of Assisi. Our leadership philosophy is based on the foundation that youth leadership flows from a personal relationship with Christ. Therefore, we first give teens the tools to grow closer in their relationship with Jesus and then give them the essentials for servant leadership and evangelization.

Each day of training consists of workshops on discipleship including how to develop a prayer life, overcoming sin through the sacraments, and other practical tools for developing their Catholic faith. The week will also include evangelization training on being an effective witness through topics such as how to share their personal testimony, servant leadership, how to answer difficult faith questions, and being an authentic witness.

What people are saying about LEAD…

“LEAD completely changed my perspective and kickstarted far more spiritual flourishing than I could’ve imagined. I witnessed what it truly meant to live an authentic Christian life, made friendships that have continued to direct me to the heart of the Lord, and attended a college that allowed my relationship with him to advance far more rapidly than it would’ve anywhere else.” // Cody S.

“I am not exaggerating when I say that Franciscan LEAD has changed my life. God has truly anointed this program, and I have seen him do more radically glorious things through Franciscan LEAD than I have in any other ministry in which I have been involved. I will forever be grateful for the foundation of prayer and discipleship that Franciscan LEAD gave me and that it continues to build in others.” // Ana T.

“I went on Franciscan LEAD in high school, feeling incredibly nervous and out of place. All of my fears and nerves were put to rest by the greeting of one of the facilitators, who became one of my best friends and, as all good friends should, continues to point me to the throne of God. To this day, Franciscan LEAD is the best retreat in which I’ve ever participated.” // William D.

“Franciscan LEAD equipped me with the practical tools I needed to follow Christ in my everyday life. It helped me to cultivate an authentic prayer life, to root myself in the sacraments, and it taught me how to be a joyful witness of Christ’s love in the world. Franciscan LEAD was more than an incredible retreat moment during my high-school years – it was a movement that helped me grow into the disciple I am today.” // Lauren K.

Workshop Session 4: Wednesday, 10:45 am – Noon

1.   The Ecclesial Method (CT1 / RCIA2)  Dr. James Pauley (St. Joseph Center, Classroom B)

Catechesis is not meant to be a merely conceptual presentation of the faith, but rather, the Church intends it to be carried out in an evangelizing way, in a way that invites people into intimate communion with Jesus and a response of faith. Join us as we explore a five-step method of lesson planning focused toward kerygmatic proclamation and disciple-making, an approach pioneered here at Franciscan University. This workshop engages teaching methods and shares lots of practical teaching ideas.

2.   Praying with Scripture: Lectio Divina (CT2)  Teresa Hawes  (Egan Hall, Room 113)

Lectio Divina, “Divine Reading” is an ancient way of praying with Scripture. It is a slow, thoughtful encounter with the living Word of God. This workshop will explore aspects of this time-honored form of prayer, and attempt to put it into practice.

3.   The Essential Link Between Liturgy and Catechesis (PCL1 / CS1 / RCIA1/ CT1)  William O’Leary  (St. Joseph Center, Classroom A)

Catechesis should point, direct, and link those being catechized to the liturgy, especially the Eucharist. This workshop will lay the foundation of catechesis and liturgy and provide examples of how to do liturgical catechesis.

4.   Developing a Missionary Mindset (YA) Marcel LeJeune (JCWC, Gentile Gallery)

Every Catholic disciple is called to be on mission to the world. But how do we break out of a culture that keeps evangelization rooted in our parish programs, classes, and events? What does personal mission look like for a Catholic who wants to become a better evangelist? This session is for the Catholic evangelists who want to learn how to have the mindset of missionary discipleship, with practical tips on what actually helps us become more fruitful.

5.  Kerygmatic Accompaniment with Teenagers  (YM1)  Dr. Bob Rice (FFH: Aerobics Room, 2nd Floor)

Details to come

6.   How to Avoid Bad Meetings (DO)  Ken Ogorek (FFH: Performance Room, 2nd Floor)

As part of our ongoing series for leaders, this session reviews the principals of organizational health then presents a proven method of making meetings more productive and fulfilling rather than being the drudgery they call to mind in most staff members. If you are interested in helping leadership teams make steady progress on important goals while seeing to it that individuals are well informed and core values are reinforced, then you’ll love this session and use the resources it provides!  Join us and put your last worthless meeting behind you.

7.   Introduction to Educating in Christ   Dr. Gerald O’Shea  (Cosmas and Damian, Pugliese Auditorium)

This talk describes an adaptation of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to the specific circumstances of Catholic school classrooms. It is based on the book Educating in Christ. The method has been implemented successfully in Australian schools, including a whole diocesan school system. The adaptation includes ways in which materials can be scaled down and stored, assessment, yearly overviews, instruction booklets for teachers, doctrinal overviews, and learning journals.

8.   Developing a Vision for the Domestic Church  Dr. Greg and Lisa Popcak  (Cosmas and Damian, Room 300)

Are Catholic families called to be different from other families? If so, how? So many parents experience family life as an obstacle to spiritual growth. What does a dynamic, family-based spirituality look like? How can parents confidently raise faithful Catholic kids? The Popcaks share insights from their opening keynote at the Vatican World Meeting of Families that respond to these questions and present a newly articulated, empirically-based model of family well-being and spirituality.

9.   Attachment and Morality: A Catholic View of the Human Person
Dr. Andrew Sodergren   (Cosmas and Damian, Room 206)

This talk will integrate a Catholic vision of the human person and insights from modern psychology to explore how we learn how to love. We will delve into insights from attachment theory to uncover how experiences in our family of origin shape our capacity to love others, ourselves, and even God. This will lead to key insights into healing and growth as well.

10.   Organizational Health and Building a Cohesive Leadership Team
Paco Gavrilides (JCWC. St. Leo Room)

The primary focus of this talk it is provide wisdom, insight, and practical understanding for building and maintaining a unified, contented, and effective leadership team for the purpose of maximum spiritual fruitfulness in service and ministry. This talk will also address some of the particular obstacles to the exercise of successful leadership.

Workshop Session 5: Wednesday, 2:00 pm – 3:15 pm

1.    Scripture: The Heart of Catechesis (CT1 / RCIA1)  Dr. Eric Westby (St. Joseph Center, Classroom B)

Details to come

2.    Liturgy and Catechetical Methodology (CT2 / CS2)   Dr. Amy Roberts  (Egan Hall, Room 113)

The Directory for Catechesis states that the Church’s “sacramental mission cannot be separated from the process of evangelization” and that liturgy and catechesis should both be “oriented toward bringing to life the experience of God’s love.” This workshop will consider how to form students for receptive participation in the liturgy that allows them to experience his love.

3.    Recruiting, Training, and Forming Volunteers I (PCL1)  Dr. Martha Drennan  (Cosmas and Damian, Pugliese Auditorium)

Details to come

4.   The Catechumenate: Paradigm for All Catechesis (PCL2 / RCIA2) – Gigi Zapiain (Cosmas and Damian, Room 300)

The General Directory for Catechesis (1997) called the baptismal catechumenate, “the paradigm [model] for all catechesis.” How does this translate into the day-to-day instruction in and sharing of the faith with those already baptized? We will explore how this does not mean reproducing the OCIA in a programmatic fashion, but taking on its style and formative dynamism.

5.  The Preventive System of St. John Bosco (CS1) – Fr. Lou Molinelli, SDB (Cosmas and Damian, Room 206)

This presentation will discuss the elements of the Preventive System of St. John Bosco and its application to the world of the young in the setting of catechesis. We will explore the basic spirituality that underlies the Preventive System and its application to our role as catechists and in the lives of the young.

6.   Vocational Discernment with Teenagers (YM1)  Gina Bauer  (Egan Hall, Room 213)

This workshop will explore Pope Francis‘s Apostolic Exhortation CHRISTUS VIVIT, Christ is Alive, and what practices we can implement in our youth ministry programs to aid teenagers in the discernment of their vocations.

7.  An Interconnected Net: Intra and Extra-Parish Ministries With Teens (YM2)  Dr. Bob Rice/Kris Frank (FFH: Aerobics Room, 2nd Floor

Is a youth group, alone, enough for our parishes to offer teens? As a Church, can we give young people more than a weekly program? This workshop will examine how to best serve teens by connecting them to the entire parish and further ministry opportunities outside the typical youth program.

8.  Prayer: The Foundation of Mission (YA)  Marcel LeJeune (JCWC: Gentile Gallery)

Our personal mission is built on our personal prayer lives. If we want to be better at evangelizing others, we have to go deeper in prayer. Not just any kind of prayer, but prayer that is built on understanding God’s heart, which longs for the salvation of a world that is in desperate need. God wants to have us share this desire and depth of intimacy with his heart. This session will help us explore what a missionary prayer life looks like.

9.  Working With Priests (DO) Ann Lankford (FFH: Performance Room, 2nd Floor)

A priest is consecrated in Christ’s name “to feed the Church by the word and grace of God.” But he is also a fellow human being with weaknesses who experiences conversion and routinely receives the Sacrament of Confession. This interactive session will discuss the proper attitude, relationship, and boundaries needed in working with priests in order to draw forth the greatest fruit for the Kingdom of God.

10.   Teaching the Eucharist to Children   Dr. Gerard O’Shea (FFH)

The Eucharist is an unfolding mystery . Sofia Cavalletti noted that everything God has ever done, everything he is doing now, and everything he will ever do is in some way symbolized in the Eucharist. This talk will identify the ways in which different strategies and materials need to be employed to account for the typical developmental stages from children to adolescents. It will focus in particular on the “mystagogy” of the sacrament, making links between the liturgy and the Scriptures.

A Message for Individual Guests

Thank you for being a part of the very first livestreamed Steubenville Youth Conference! This will not be a series of random, pre-recorded talks. Rather, you will be joining a live conference broadcast from Orlando, Florida, through our digital platform. There will be a full band and dynamic worship, awesome talks, prayer, and fun! And most importantly, the Holy Spirit will be there, strengthening and empowering us.

We know that there are many across the nation who are participating as an individual and unable to gather with a group. You may be feeling isolated and trying to figure out how to best stay connected to others, especially during this time. We hope that the suggestions below will help you to enter into this time and experience the love of Christ.

Thank you for being here. May God bless you abundantly!

The Steubenville Conferences Team

  • Reach out. Even if your youth group is not participating in the event, reach out to one person in your life (e.g., a friend, parent, sibling, mentor) to share about your experience.
  • Invite a friend to sign up and watch, too! This may be an opportunity for a friend to encounter Jesus in a new way.
  • Reflect and journal. Keep a journal and pen at hand. During the breaks, use the small group questions provided to pray with and write about what has stood out to you and what God is doing in your life.
  • Spend time in personal prayer. Read and pray with the Scriptures that were shared in the keynotes. Allow God to speak to you through them. Sit in silence in the Lord’s presence. A simple method to follow:

Praise: Offer God praise and thanksgiving for who he is and what he has done for you.

Ask: Offer prayers of petition to God for your intentions and the intentions of others. He wants us to speak our needs to him.

Listen: Silence your heart and mind and wait for God to speak. It may be helpful to read a passage from Scripture. Sit in silence, paying attention to how your heart or mind may be moved to a particular word or image.

  • Post comments and pictures in the live chat and/or to social media using the hashtag #SteubieLive to tell us about your conference experience!

A Message for Group Leaders & Parents

Peace and blessings!

First, thank you for your “yes” to serve the young Church. Accompanying young people on their faith journeys is never easy, and the fallout of the pandemic has made it even more challenging. Yet, here you are–doing what you do and being awesome. Be assured that God has chosen you to lead at this time and will bless you with everything you need to help your teens encounter Christ’s love.

You may be wondering, “How is this going to work? How can I lead my teens through this experience and help them to get the most out of it?” Do not worry! We have prepared these resources to inspire you and equip you for the task. Whether you are a seasoned youth ministry veteran or a parent who is doing something like this for the first time, you will find everything you need to have a great, shared faith-building experience.

May God bless you abundantly!

Unbound Prayer Ministry

RSVP below to request to be contacted by an Unbound Prayer Ministry team member about scheduling a full Unbound Prayer Session. You can also visit the Find a Team page to locate an Unbound Ministry team in your area. https://www.heartofthefather.com/prayer/find-a-prayer-team/

Before contacting a team to receive an Unbound ministry session, it is recommended that you read the first seven chapters of Unbound: A Practical Guide to Deliverance by Neal Lozano. We find this preparation is important before receiving ministry because it helps you understand the model and opens your heart to see the areas of bondage you may have in your life. It is also recommended that you are part of a church or a group of Christian friends who will support you as you seek deeper freedom in Christ.

Logo Design

Process

NSC and NSC Council Members formed a special team to pray and discern through each step of the design process with the goal of a logo that would embody the new name and dynamic launch into the action of Bring.Build.Serve.

Meaning

Tongues of fire from Pentecost and baptismal waters come together to form a dove taking flight – the movements of the Holy Spirit.

Why Rename the NSC?

The NSC / NSC Council members will continue to serve the Catholic Charismatic Renewal as part of a national organization, but now with a different name: Pentecost Today USA.

Our new name captures our new vision and mission in response to the CHARIS commission and clearly distinguishes us from the newly-formed CHARIS National Service of Communion USA, of which we are a key participant:

  • “Pentecost” conveys baptism in the Holy Spirit and the charisms
  • “Today” stresses the urgency of our vision and mission
  • “USA” is our mission field

Our Mission

Founded in the 1970s by renewal leaders from across the nation, Pentecost Today USA (National Service Committee of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of the U.S.) raises up, connects, and equips renewal leaders.

As the NSC launches its new name, Pentecost Today USA, we are stepping into the action of the CHARIS-rooted mission to:

  • Bring baptism in the Holy Spirit to the whole Church
  • Build unity in the body of Christ
  • Serve the physically and spiritually poor

Unbound: Heart of the Father

At Unbound: Heart of the Father Ministries, our calling is to equip the church with insights, practical guidelines, teaching, and resources so that the broken and lost can encounter Jesus in the darkest area of their soul. Our desire is for people to experience liberation in Jesus Christ and walk in the freedom of knowing they are children of the eternal Father.

Online Prayer Ministry

From across the nation, teams from the Unbound Network —and even a team from Scotland—will offer online prayer during adoration led by Father Dave Pivonka, TOR, at Jesus 2020.

Prayer teams will serve from 4:15pm-6:15pm EST, and each prayer session will last approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

Although these sessions are for individual prayer needs and not Unbound prayer per se, the Unbound Network brings the gift and grace of its prayer teams’ significant training, formation, and ability to pray alongside people confidentially in a posture of faith and love.

Bring Baptism in the Holy Spirit to the whole Church

Father Boniface Hicks, OSB – Jesus, Splendor of the Father: Charismatic Prayer

Christian prayer is incarnational and trinitarian.  That is to say that it involves our whole human nature, and it is always relational.  Like our relationships with other human beings, we relate with God through our emotions, thoughts, words, and actions.  As with our human relationships, our intimacy with God deepens through vulnerability, and our union with Him goes beyond words and images.  Charismatic prayer fits naturally and neatly into this bigger picture of Christian prayer.  In this talk, Father Boniface Hicks, OSB, will explain how the charismatic gifts join the broader tradition of Christian prayer.

Sister Marie Fidelis, DLJC – Jesus, Author of Life: History of the Renewal

“Lord, Renew Your wonders in this our day, as by a new Pentecost….” In miraculous and astounding ways, God heard and answered this prayer of the Church during the 20th Century. What is the correlation between Pope Leo XIII and Pentecostalism? How did spirit-filled Christians contribute to the beginnings of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal? What does February of 1967 have to do with me? Speaking from The Ark and The Dove Worldwide, Sister Marie Fidelis, DLJC, will lead us on a journey through the origins and history of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, leading us to renew our commitment to spread this grace throughout the world, proclaiming Jesus Christ is Lord!

Peter Mallampalli – Jesus, Mighty God, Signal Fire at Duquesne

Jesus is not a “one and done” kind of God. Instead, He continually renews the face of the earth. In 1967, God used a retreat weekend for Duquesne University students to start a spiritual fire that spread to millions of people around the world. Fifty years later, that grace returned to Duquesne in a special way to light the path again! Prior to entering seminary, Peter Mallampalli studied at Duquesne for two years, so he knows the story well. As he shares it, may our faith be strengthened by hearing of God’s generous gift and His continuing faithfulness in blessing the good work that he began many years ago.

Build Unity in the Body of Christ

Matt Lozano – Jesus, God of Peace: Choosing Love and Unity in a Time of Division

How do we strive for unity in the body of Christ when the divisions around us threaten to separate us? Matt Lozano of Heart of the Father Ministries shares about the importance of Christian unity and ways to preserve and strengthen it, despite disagreements and conflicts.

Matt Maher – Jesus, King of Glory: Embracing Ecumenism

A nine time-GRAMMY® nominee and three-time GMA Dove Award winner, singer/songwriter Matt Maher is well known for songs such as his Top 5 CCLI song “Lord, I Need You” and the chart-topping radio single “Because He Lives (Amen).” Penning numerous songs recorded by Chris Tomlin, Crowder, Third Day, Jeremy Camp, Matt Redman, Hillsong, Casting Crowns, Meredith Andrews, Jesus Culture, Jars of Clay, and Passion, Matt will share his own ecumenical experience and challenge us to a posture of listening and humility as we embrace ecumenism in our own lives.

Serve the Poor

Lauren Koath – Jesus, Sun of Justice: Drawing Closer to God in Serving the Poor

In her work with Vagabond Missions, Lauren Koath has seen firsthand the effects of spiritual and physical poverty in the inner city. Her work has allowed her to connect with the poor in spirit to bring the hope and joy of the Gospel into the streets of Pittsburgh. Lauren will reflect on her time as an inner-city missionary and challenge us to seek, find, and share the incredible love of the Holy Spirit among and for the poor.

Father Anthony Ouellette – Jesus, Good Shepherd: Hierarchical Support of the Renewal

Leadership and its structures for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the United States grew and developed in a variety of ways since its birth, including diocesan, covenant community, ministry, ethnic, and liaison. The CHARIS initiative and its structuring as part of the Roman Curia affirms that this current of grace is for the whole of the Catholic Church. Father Anthony Ouellette examines how we, in our current positions of leadership and structure, respond, adapt, and collaborate to make this grace available for all in the Church.

Friday Keynote:
JESUS!! – Father Dave Pivonka

2020 is a year that all of us will remember . . . probably forever. It has perhaps been one of the most difficult and strange years of our whole lifetime. But we must never forget the powerful reality that JESUS is still LORD, even of 2020! And it’s not despite the difficulties, but actually because of them and through them!

Jesus is Lord, He is King, He is sovereign–over the pandemic, over all the chaos and uncertainty. With God, there is always more. More zeal. More chances to start anew. More Jesus!

Father Dave Pivonka, TOR, will speak on how Jesus, the King of Kings, calls us beyond a life that is insular, tired, and boring. Instead, He anoints us with the Holy Spirit and with fire, then sends us out in power to a world thirsting for the Gospel.

Saturday Session 1 Keynote:
For Such a Time as This -Peter Herbeck/Mary Bielski

Have you stopped to consider why? Why has everything that has taken place happened? Why are we here, right now, in this unique time in history? The words from the book of Esther ring true for us, “For such a time as this.” Perhaps we were born for such a time as this?

God has planned all along that in this very difficult time in history we would be here, that we would be alive right now and would be called to be beacons of hope and love in the midst of a hurting and broken world. God has put us here on this earth at this time for a reason, and each of us needs to reconnect with our fundamental calling and mission.

Peter Herbeck and Mary Bielski will help us understand that mission and more firmly respond to the call Jesus has placed on our lives.

Saturday Session 2 Video:
The CHARIS Commission -Bishop Peter Smith

The Catholic Charismatic Renewal has taken a step forward into the heart of the Church with the recent formation of CHARIS, at the direction of Pope Francis. CHARIS is designed to assist the vision and voice of the renewal as we seek to do the Lord’s work in bringing the baptism in the Holy Spirit to the whole Church!

Bishop Peter Smith, of the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon, is an appointed representative of the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life as a member of the CHARIS leadership team. In this presentation, he will clearly explain the structure and organization of this new organization and its exciting mission to support and guide the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in its ministry to “Bring-Build-Serve” the body of Christ throughout the world.

Saturday Session 2 Keynote:
Dry Bones –Dr. Scott Hahn

In the book of Ezekiel, the Lord tells His prophet to look out over a valley of dry bones. As Ezekiel watches, the bones come back together and take on flesh, but he sees that there is no breath in them. Something very important is missing.

In this talk, Dr. Scott Hahn will offer a powerful theological reflection and personal witness and share how the Lord fulfilled His promise to Ezekiel that, “I will put my Spirit within you and you shall live.”

Saturday Discussion Panel:
CHARIS Bring-Build-Serve!

How has and is Jesus leading and empowering us to bring baptism in the Holy Spirit to the whole Church, build unity in the body of Christ, and serve the poor? In this discussion we will unpack the practical ways to step into the action of the CHARIS Commission to Bring-Build-Serve.

Hosts: John Beaulieu & Alicia Hartle

Panelists: Matt Lozano, Lauren Koath, Sister Marie Fidelis, DLJC, and Peter Mallampalli

Saturday Session 3 Keynote:
There’s More! – Jim Beckman

What are your dreams, the big goals you have set for yourself? There’s more for you. How’s your spiritual life going? Have you experienced the love of God? There’s even more! Ever feel like you are unworthy, or that you somehow have crossed that line where the mercy of God might run out for you? There is infinitely more! He is superabundant! Our God is not a God of limitations. And there is no end to His mercy, His grace, His power and His love for us.

And more importantly, there’s more that WE can give to access what God is offering to us. It’s a fundamental principle of the spiritual life: God can never be outdone in generosity. If you think you have even begun to receive all that God wants to give, think again; there’s more!

Jim Beckman will lead us in a powerful reflection to help us see the places in our hearts we still need to give to Jesus in order to experience His transforming love and become bold conduits of His mercy to others.

View the Night of Hope Livestream

Night of Hope Keynote:
Mary, Spouse of the Holy Spirit: Our Model of Receptivity and Fruitfulness –Mary Bielski

We look to Mary, the Mother of Jesus and the Spouse of the Holy Spirit as an intimate and powerful model of what it looks like to say “yes” to God with humility and docility, and without reservation. Being open and receptive to God takes courage, but the fruit of Mary’s yes was Jesus Christ’s entry into the world. Are you open to receiving the Holy Spirit? What will be the fruit of your response to the Holy Spirit? Are you willing to go where He sends you? Are you willing to be the person He has created you to be?

The time of eucharistic adoration, prayer, and empowerment that follows this talk will focus on the fact that now is the time to step out in hope and faith, now is the time to say “yes” to the Holy Spirit, and now is the time to deeply believe that God is worthy of trust and that Jesus truly is Lord!
